  1. ATLANTA, GA, 10 February 1992 -- Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. today
  2. announced LANstep Starter Kit and LANstep Mail Gateway Version 1.1 with
  3. MHS. Hayes also announced its 1992 plans for LANstep Version 2.0 and a
  4. series of add-in products that take advantage of LANstep's technology and
  5. provide advanced connectivity solutions on a LANstep network.

  7. With LANstep's enhanced capabilities, users can access several networks
  8. from a single location; use the home or portable PC as a remote node on
  9. the network; connect Macintosh computers to their LANstep network; and
  10. transfer electronic mail (E-mail) worldwide to any MHS-compliant system.

  12. "When we announced LANstep last year we wanted to reach a market that had
  13. not been served -- the small business location which may not have a LAN
  14. expert onsite but depends on computers to manage its business. LANstep
  15. offered reliable, strong networking capabilities that users learned
  16. quickly even if they did not have DOS experience. LANstep was only limited
  17. in size and internetworking capabilities," said Hayes President Dennis C.
  18. Hayes. "Now we are taking the covers off the underlying technology to show
  19. the wider capability of LANstep and to allow our customers to expand their
  20. network to any number of workstations or users -- locally or over wide
  21. area connections. Users can also interconnect with other networks while
  22. maintaining all the LANstep advantages that no other networks can match,"
  23. he added.

  25. LANstep Starter Kit
  26.  
  27. Hayes LANstep Starter Kit provides, in one box, everything a user needs to
  28. set up a two-station LANstep network. LANstep Starter Kit includes Hayes
  29. LANstep with LANstep Mail for five users; two Hayes EtherMate 8 network
  30. interface cards; 25 feet of thin coax cable; two T-connectors; two
  31. Ethernet terminators; and user guides that provide complete instructions
  32. for setting up and using all the included network hardware and software.

  34. Training is not required for this "do-it-yourself" kit. Anyone with basic
  35. DOS experience can install LANstep with the Starter Kit just by following
  36. the instructions. If any unexpected start-up problems occur, Hayes
  37. applications consultants and technical support engineers are available at
  38. no charge.

  40. LANstep Starter Kit will be available in March for the estimated retail
  41. price of US$795 or CA$935. Additional EtherMate 8 cards can also be
  42. purchased through Hayes Customer Service in the U.S., Canada, Europe or
  43. Asia.

  45. LANstep Mail Gateway Version 1.1 with MHS
  46.  
  47. With LANstep Mail Gateway Version 1.1, LANstep Mail can exchange E-mail
  48. with any MHS-compliant system, such as Da Vinci E-Mail, on any LAN running
  49. over modems or direct asynchronous connections. The product also supports
  50. Hayes ESP. Adding one of many third party MHS gateway products allows
  51. LANstep Mail to communicate with Macintosh mail systems, cc:Mail, PROFS,
  52. VAXMail--even X.400.

  54. LANstep Mail Gateway with MHS comes complete with a copy of Novell's
  55. NetWare MHS which is installed on the LANstep network along with the Mail
  56. Gateway. "In the world of diverse systems, it's important that people can

  61. like Hayes has chosen NetWare MHS as their solution for E-mail
  62. connectivity. NetWare MHS provides a solid link between Hayes LANstep,

  65. LANstep automatically provides conversion between LANstep Mail and MHS
  66. formats as needed. LANstep Mail Gateway with MHS debuts at NetWorld Boston
  67. and will be available late first quarter for US$395 or CA$465.

  69. SECOND QUARTER 1992

  71. LANstep Version 2.0
  72.  
  73. LANstep Version 2.0, coming second quarter, features the following
  74. enhancements:

  76. ∙ Faster installation with the option to bypass repartitioning of the disk
  77. when setting up shared disk drives
  78.  
  79. ∙ Multiprotocol capability to allow LANstep connectivity with NetWare,
  80. TCP/IP, and other networks simultaneously from the same PC using a single
  81. network interface card

  83. ∙ New security features including login/logout auditing
  84.  
  85. ∙ Full support of standard mode Windows operation on all workstation types
  86.  
  87. ∙ Additional language support including French, German and Spanish
  88.  
  89. ∙ Enhanced Developer Kit with new APIs for LANstep's powerful multitasking
  90. and distributed processing capabilities

  92. Later in the year, Hayes will take advantage of EGA/VGA displays by adding
  93. GUI (Graphical User Interface) options to the LANstep interface.

  95. THIRD QUARTER 1992 
  96.  
  97. LANstep Remote Workstation
  98.  
  99. LANstep Remote Workstation allows a remote computer to become a node on a
  100. LANstep network. An asynchronous connection (i.e. over a modem) extends
  101. the network cable to the remote user. LANstep Remote Workstation takes
  102. advantage of selective data filtering and data compression to provide
  103. fast, efficient operation.

  105. Because remote users are connected as actual nodes on the LANstep network,
  106. operation is fully transparent. The remote PC operates as if it were a
  107. locally attached workstation. In addition, a dedicated workstation is not
  108. needed on the local LAN for each remote user, as would be required by
  109. other "remote control" solutions. All workstations on the LANstep network
  110. remain available for local use, even if they are being used as the
  111. connection point for one or more remote workstations. LANstep Remote
  112. Workstation will be available third quarter.

  114. LANstep Mac Connection
  115.  
  116. LANstep Mac Connection, also available third quarter, allows Macintosh
  117. computers to become clients on a LANstep network. From a Macintosh, users
  118. can access LANstep file and printer services using the Macintosh "Chooser"
  119. interface (e.g. a Macintosh user can select a shared LANstep file service
  120. just as though it were an AppleShare server). No special software is
  121. required for the Macintosh.

  123. FOURTH QUARTER 1992 
  124.  
  125. LANstep Network Gateway
  126.  
  127. The LANstep Network Gateway provides seamless connections between two or
  128. more LANstep networks for any LANstep network service such as file
  129. sharing, printer sharing, E-mail, and network management.

  131. LANstep Network Gateway, available fourth quarter, supports either wide
  132. area (dial-up) or local area (backbone) links. Networks of virtually
  133. unlimited size can be created by connecting multiple LANstep networks
  134. using LANstep Network Gateways. Because the LANstep architecture allows
  135. all services to be easily imported and exported across multiple networks,
  136. centralized management of large, multi-site networks is easily achieved.

  138. Applications consultants and technical support engineers for the LANstep
  139. product line are available through Hayes Customer Service in the U.S.,
  140. Canada, Europe and Asia. In addition, the Hayes Bulletin Board System is
  141. available 24 hours a day at 404/HI MODEM or 800/US HAYES for technical
  142. support.
